COURSES TAUGHT
Contemporary Non-American Literature * ¦ Interlochen Arts Academy
I designed this course to teach creative writing students how to become better writers by understanding the ways in which stories are crafted in other cultures. The course expands students’ world view by introducing them to world literatures, which in turn serve as models for their own work. We read fiction, poetry, and nonfiction from countries such as Iraq and Iran; Libya and Syria; Israel and Palestine; Chile, Argentina and Columbia; South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda; Russia, Georgia and Turkey; and many more.

Creative Writing Workshop ¦ Interlochen Arts Academy
This fiction workshop provides the informal experience of group critique and exchange. We study both student writing and the works of professional authors.

Writing for Magazines ¦ UW Experimental College
This course features the fundamentals of journalism as well as how to spot a story, how to find the angle in a story, how to make the most of an interview, and how to pitch editors. Most importantly, I demonstrate how to craft a magazine article that is compelling and effective. Students write a variety of articles, ranging from short news stories to science, business, travel and lifestyle features.

Creating Lyric Fiction ¦ Richard Hugo House
Self-designed one-day course teaching students how some of poetry’s devices—such as rhythm, pace and repetition—can be used to create more poetic prose.
